Keep Sowing Seeds

A few years ago we held a Night of Hope event at the recently renamed Oracle Park in San Francisco. It's a beautiful baseball stadium with its great views of the bay. While we were walking around the stadium, I noticed there were birds all over the field. I was told that to keep the grass growing in evenly and to fix all the worn spots, workers went out every day to throw grass seed, which also attracted the birds. They would throw such an abundance of seeds that the birds couldn't possibly eat it all, and thus the beautiful grass.

That reminded me of our lives. We want beautifully green lives, but we have some brown patches, some worn patches where we need the grass to grow, we need to improve. Maybe we need to break a bad habit, or start saving money, or restore a relationship. Every one of us has an area of our life where we want to grow, we want to see it flourish, but it's been a discouraging struggle. If we're going to see changes in our life, we have to plant seed and keep putting it out there in abundance.

In Matthew 13, Jesus told the parable of the man who went out to sow his seed in the field. But where the soil was hard, the seeds remained on the surface, and the birds came and ate the seed. But Jesus also talked about the seed falling on good soil and producing an amazing crop. He didn't talk about the birds coming and eating the seed there, though I'm sure they did. He wanted you to see that if you keep throwing those seeds out and you keep the soil of your heart fertile, they're going to take root and grow. He's saying, "Don't look at the birds; look at your seed. The seeds that you are sowing will outlast any birds, any trials, any difficulties that you face. Just keep your soil fertile with praise and thanksgiving. Keep doing what's right, keep coming to church, keep reading the Word, and keep praying. You won't be disappointed. I'll crown your efforts with success."

There will always be birds trying to steal our seed. Just throw out more seed than they can eat. Our God, the Creator of the universe, can open doors supernaturally. He can cause your finances to go further. He can cause things to happen that you've never dreamed possible. Be determined and say, "I'm not going to focus on the problems. I'm focusing on the fact that my God is able to take the seed sown and do more than I can ask, think, or imagine."
